Cross-Pollinate: A Speaker Series

Listen to Cross-Pollinate Vol. II: HERE
Listen to Our Jackson Community MixHERE

If you had to describe Jackson, Mississippi in one word, that word would have to be “burgeoning.”  We are a town full of artists, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs. Jackson is full of people with drive and we are doing “world class” things.  For us to sustain and expand on the promise that surrounds us, we must seize the initiative and start a new conversation, a two-sided conversation, between Jackson and the rest of the world.  That is why we have started Cross-Pollinate: A Speaker Series.

As the name suggests, “Cross-Pollinate” is about creating a mutually beneficial interaction between Jacksonians and today’s most creative and successful young thinkers, artists, and activists.   Each Cross-Pollination will bring to Jackson one featured speaker and ask them to give an "Intellectual Argument" and then, the following night, their "Artistic Response."

These speakers will always be young intellectuals who are strong in their academic field and also, in unique ways, successful artists.  For three days, the speaker will meet with a wide range of Jacksonians and in a variety of situations that will be enlightening for us and for them.   When the speakers leave, they will leave as a new ambassador for our City.

June 25 - June 26 = Cross-Pollinate Vol. II

PAST SPEAKERS:

Cross-Pollinate Vol. I Featured Shahid Buttar, the executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee(“BRDC”). BRDC is a national grassroots organization dedicated to building a popular movement to restore the rule of law and civil liberties eroded by the war on terror.  The organization addresses warrantless surveillance, arbitrary detention, torture with impunity and the executive secrecy that pervades each of these policy areas.  Heather Hurlburt, Executive Director of the National Security Network, recently included Mr. Buttar among her list of “recommended voices” on the issue of national security policy under President Obama.

The Intellectual Argument:

In a world full of danger, why does it matter and how do we go about holding accountable officials charged with the responsibility of protecting the public?  Drawing on his experiences as the executive director of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, Mr. Buttar will discuss the importance of challenging public servants in the federal government who authorized torture, illegal surveillance, and other encroachments on human rights and civil liberties.

Starting from the context of international terrorism and actions by the federal government, Mr. Buttar will move on to show how the themes of accountability, respect for rule of law and respect for human rights play an equally crucial role in the world of local law enforcement and the promotion of good local governance.  Consistent with Cross-Pollination’s goal of increasing civic participation, this evening will place an emphasis on concrete steps people can take at the local level to improve political accountability relative to issues of human rights and civil liberties.

The Artistic Response:

For the artists showcase on Saturday, at One to One Studios, Mr. Buttar performed a spoken word set backed by local Jackson musicians and spoken word artists.
